YY Gray plays outsider anthems with bedroom eyes. Singer-songwriter Sosha Young grew up in a musical family in the small town of Stroudsburg in Eastern Pennsylvania, then after moving to The Bay Area with her single mom, she spent a complicated adulthood as a commercial ad-writer, working in restaurants and bouncing around less-than-ideal living situations in The Bay Area. Molded by a complicated musical family, her music grew from an impulse to heal the rejection of a largely absent jazz-musician father renown as a commercial sessions recording artist on saxophone, flute, clarinet & whistling. Raised in the shadow of her absent father’s virtuosity, she would eventually cast off his rejection, embrace her unique voice and started performing her songs on acoustic guitar as “Froggie” in 2018. In 2021, Young met partner, drummer/producer Ricky Ybarra and he brought along his bass player of 15 years, Julian Gray to bring her songs to life. Ybarra and Gray launched a rhythm section that combined with Young’s smokey vocal sound, which they they dubbed “garage-a-nova—” and called themselves YY Gray, based on their last names.

With the addition of Geoff McCann on lead guitar and Pete Egan on keyboards, YY Gray is a five-piece band from Oakland, California. Their music draws influences from girl groups and Latin jazz from the 1960’s, 70’s soul and 90’s indie rock.

Live shows are an emotional rollercoaster ride that leave you feeling washed up onto a private beach.

YY Gray is currently in the process of recording singles for their debut LP to be completed and released next year.
